About Us

The Globe Works of Howard and Bullough grew from humble beginnings into a gigantic operation in the early twentieth century.

Started in 1853 by Mr Howard and Mr Bleakley the works manufactured machinery and parts for supply to the Lancashire textile industry and beyond to many exotic far flung parts of the world.

1995 :

The remaining  buildings were totally transformed by a joint venture between Stuart Nevison, Hyndburn Borough Council and Barnfield Construction.

1993 :

The Globe Works sadly closed its doors for business in 1993 –140 years after they were first opened.

1970 :

The name Howard and Bullough disappeared from the works in 1970 when the company became Platt International.

WWII :

The 6,000+ workforce turned it’s focus to the manufacture of shells, gun carriages and aircraft parts as The Globe Works played its role in the allied war effort.

1930 :

The site was now covered
over 5 acres with major
works carried out to
improve lighting, ventilation and heating. Train lines ran into the main building for serving out the hot metal
from furnaces

1862 :

The real boom begins
when Mr Bleakey left the business, with inventor James Bullough taking his place. At this time 150 people were employed and the business soon grew with the manufacture of looms.

Born from the ruins of the Howard & Bullough Globe Works The Globe Centre is today the jewel in the Globe Enterprises portfolio – a modern business hub with office, conferencing and dining facilities as well as a place to expand your network.
